J! 7/19

The scores to beat are $22,222 and $22,000. If either of tonight's losers beat one of those scores, they will clinch a Wild Card berth. Players tonight are:

Kyle Neblett (a senior from Beaverton, Oregon)
Tommy Maranges (a junior from Ft. Lauderdale, FL)
Kristiana Henderson (a junior from Kent, Washington)

Opening categories:

LET'S VISIT INDIA
CELEBS
WASHINGTON, LINCOLN OR GEORGE W. BUSH
SUMMERTIME
THE SHAPE OF THINGS
RHYME TIME

Henderson goes Daily Double hunting right out of the gate, and so does Maranges. Maranges finds the Daily Double under the $1,000 clue in The Shape of Things. At this point, he only leads by $200 over the lady, $2,800 to $2,600, while Neblett has $1,400. The leader bets IT ALL.

It's another term for a spiral, especially when talking about spiraled strands of DNA.

"What is a heliocase?"....NO WAY, and he goes down to zero. It was a double helix, of course. At the end of the round, the lady is still leading with $3,600, but Neblett is now in second with $3,400. Maranges has $2,200.

DJ! categories:

NAME THAT PLANET
BE A SPORT
TEEN QUEENS
THE OLD TESTAMENT
LANGUAGE LAB
POSSIBLE SAT VOCABULARY

Neblett takes the lead early on, and after getting the $800 and $1,200 clues in the planet category to go to $7,800, he finds the first Daily Double under the $1,600 clue there. He bets $2,200 for an even ten grand if he's right.

A year on this planet is only 88 days long.

Both he and I said "What is Mercury?"...and that's right to go to $10,000! He went to $12,000 after getting the $2,000 clue there. He then gets on a bit of a roll and is closing in on a runaway victory. After missing a $2,000 clue in Language Lab, Maranges is a grand in the hole. But after making it out late, he finds the Daily Double under the $800 clue in the SAT category. But this game is practically over by now, as Neblett has $14,800, while Maranges has $2,600 and the lady has just $400. Maranges bets it all.

The body of songs a Chanteuse is prepared to sing or of plays a company is prepared to put on.

The man takes too long. Correct: What is a repertoire? Now, there is a small possibility that both Maranges and the lady could miss FJ! if the lady is wrong on the $400 clue in the same category. Here it is.

Of praise, increase or mock, what you do to something you augment.

Maranges says "What is increase?"...he and the lady are going to FJ! with $400 each.

FJ! category, just for the heck of it: The 50 States.

It was the only state physically and politically formed directly because of The Civil War.

Correct: What is West Virginia?

Everybody got it right, but the only thing that matters is that Neblett is the only one out of this group of players to make it to the semifinals. The others leave with $5,000 each. Also making it to the next round are Greg Peterson and Meryl Federman.
