"World Series of Pop Culture" Quarterfinal Show 1

Who will be the new pop culture trivia champions after this week? Let's find out.

The first quarterfinal pits Fragilay (who beat the champs in Round 1!) against Twisted Misters. The winners will face the winners of tonight's second quarterfinal match between Westerburg High and Three Men and a Little Lazy in one of the semifinal matches on Wednesday night.

The opening game with Andrew Webber (TMs) and Shalonda Harper (Fragilay) came down to a tiebreaker. Here's the category:

Excluding Dennis Haskins, name the core members of "Saved by the Bell". Six people are on the list.

Shalonda: Mark Paul-Gosselaar-$
Andrew: Mario Lopez-$
Shalonda: Lark Voorhies-$
Andrew: Tiffani Amber Thiessen-$
Shalonda: Dustin Diamond-$
Andrew: Elizabeth Berkley-$

Next category...this one is right up my alley- shows that have been nominated for a Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Reality-Competition program from 2004-2006, excluding "The Amazing Race". Six shows are on the list.

Andrew: "Survivor"-$
Shalonda: "Big Brother"-X

Twisted Misters won the first game. Others: "American Idol", "Last Comic Standing", "The Apprentice", "Dancing with the Stars" and "Project Runway".

Andrew Unterberger and Sherita Harrison also had to face a tiebreaker after the six regulation questions. The category now- first names of band members from N' Sync and The Backstreet Boys. Ten names are on the list.

Andrew: Justin-$
Sherita: Lance-$
Andrew: J.C.-$
Sherita: Joey-$
Andrew: Chris-$
Sherita: A.J.-$
Andrew: Nick-$
Sherita: Brian-$
Andrew: Sean-X
Sherita: Kevin-$

That ties the match at a game apiece. The last one was Howie.

For the third game, it's Victor Lee vs. Tomi Hyrish-Johnson. The category is "Movie Jerks", where questions will be about movie characters that are extremely difficult to like. The lady has the opening question.

In the 1986 movie "Top Gun", Val Kilmer plays supercool Tom Kazanski, an ace fighter pliot who is better known by what call sign?

She says "Ice Man" for the first point. The man's first question:

What 2005 comedy features Vince Vaughn's character, Jeremy Gray, being shot in the ass by preppy rich guy Zachary "Sack" Lodge?

He says "Wedding Crashers" to tie it up. Next:

In the comedy classic "Animal House", gung-ho frat goon Doug Niedermeyer is furious when he finds Kent "Flounder" Dorfman wearing what item on his ROTC uniform?

The lady says "his swatstika?"....wrong. For the steal, the man says "a pledge pendant"...he has a 2-1 lead. Fourth question:

James Spader plays the ruthlessly snooty Jeff McKee in what 1986 high school romantic comedy?

He says "Pretty in Pink" for a 3-1 lead. Next:

In addition to his classic role as Johnny Lawrence in "The Karate Kid", actor William Zabka also played a college jock named Chas in what 1986 comedy?

"Back to School?"....she's still alive! Final question:

In the 2006 comedy "Talledega Nights", Sacha Baron Cohen plays Jean Girard, a despicable French driver whose primary sponsor is what beverage company?

He says "Pariet"....this game is over and the men now have a 2-1 lead! The fourth game pits the same people as the first game of this match, and the category this time is "Five-Star Flicks". Here, a year and five stars are listed, and the players have to come up with the title of the movie. First list, to Webber:

2000: Benicio Del Toro, Michael Douglas, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Topha Grace, Erika Christensen.

"I believe it is Traffic." Yes indeed. The lady's first list:

1997: Mark Wahlberg, Burt Renyolds, Julianne Moore, Don Cheadle, Heather Graham.

She has nothing, but the man says "Boogie Nights", meaning he has a two to zip lead heading into this:

1987: Kevin Costner, Patricia Clarkson, Robert De Niro, Sean Connery, Andy Garcia.

He says "The Untouchables"....he's in the driver's seat now with a 3-0 lead! Next:

1986: Kiefer Sutherland, Will Wheaton, River Phoenix, Jerry O' Connell, Corey Feldman.

She says "Stand by Me"...the game continues. Next:

1985: Emilio Estevez, Rob Love, Andrew McCarthy, Judd Nelson, Ally Sheedy.

The man says "St. Elmo's Fire"...Twisted Misters advance to the semifinals! Now, to find out who will be their opponents.

Steve Calena (TMAALL) faces Andy Wharton (WH) in the first game, and the category is "Stranger than Fiction". This is a great category, because questions are about very memorable moments on reality TV shows. First question to Calena:

Trucker Susan Hawk sniped her way into reality show history when she delivered her crazed "let the snake eat the rat" speech on what TV series?

He says "Survivor" for the first point. First question to Wharton:

What reality show made headlines in 2003 when one of its co-stars spent part of the season premiere wondering whether tuna was chicken or fish?

My gut was "The Amazing Race", but I'm not sure. Wharton's guess is "The Married Life"....NO WAY. For the steal, Calena says "Newlywed"...that's it for a 2-0 lead, and he starts the third question.

On the series "Being Bobby Brown", what former New Edition star revealed that he uses what unusual health product to reduce the appearance of bags under his eyes?

"Egg yolk?"...no. For the steal, Wharton says nothing. Answer: Preparation H. Fourth question:

Season 2 of "The Surreal Life" featured a bizarre twist in which doe-eyed Bible thumper Tommy Faye forged an unlikely bond with what famous porno star?

Wharton says Ron Jeremy...he's on the board. Fifth question:

On a memorable episode of VH1's "Flavor of Love", the diva "New York" is spat on during the show's signature "clock ceremony" by a contestant with what nickname?

Calena says Felicious for the win....NO. For the steal, Wharton says nothing. It was Pumkin, but there's still one more question. To force a tiebreaker:

On the 2000 TV series "Who Wants to Marry a Multi-Millionaire", emergency room nurse Darva Conger married what creepy "millionaire" bachelor?

He says Rick Rockwell....for the third time tonight, it's tiebreaker time! Category this time- cast members, excluding Douglas Emerson, from the first season of "Beverly Hills 90210". 10 people are on the list.

Steve: Jason Priestley-$
Andy: Shannon Doherty-$
Steve: Tori Spelling-$
Andy: Brian Austin Green-$
Steve: Luke Perry-$
Andy: Jennie Garth-$
Steve: Ian Ziering-$
Andy: Gabrielle Carteris-$
Steve: James Eckhouse-$
Andy: ? Evans-X

Three Men and a Little Lazy wins the opening game. The other person was Carol Potter.

Westerburg High then tied it up as J.D. Warnoch defeated Matt Shuman, 3-2, on questions about trademark quotes from characters that were played by Patrick Swayze.

Gary Calena then made it 2-1 by defeating Eric Maleen 4-1 on questions that dealt with pop-culture references about instances of self-love.

Trying to keep Westerburg High afloat is Warnoch, who now faces the other Calena, Steve. Category is "Name Droppers", where a year and a lyric featuring a famous person's name is given, and the players have to come up with the right song. First lyric to Warnoch:

1989: "She's a good girl, loves her mama/Loves Jesus and America too/She's a good girl, crazy 'bout Elvis/Loves horses and her boyfriend too"

"Last Dance with Mary Jane"....NO. For the steal, Calena....can't do it. It was "Free Fallin'" by Tom Petty. Calena's first question:

1986: "Six o' clock already/I was just in the middle of a dream/I was kissin' Valentino/By a crystal blue Italian stream"

He has nothing again. For the steal, Warnoch says "Manic Monday"...by the Bangles, that is correct! Next:

2002: "And I can't provide the right type of life for my family/Cause man, these &%! food stamps don't buy diapers/And it's no movie, there's no Mekhi Phifer"

He says "Lose Yourself" by Eminem...2-0 lead! Next:

1992: "Now Andy, did you hear about this one?/Tell me, are you locked in the punch?/Andy, are you goofing on Elvis?/Hey baby, are we losing touch?"

He says "Man on the Moon" by R.E.M. to get on the board. Fifth question, to possibly force a fifth and final game:

1992: "I'm the cream of the crop, I rise to the top/I never eat a pig 'cause a pig is a cop/Or better yet a terminator/Like Arnold Schwarzenegger"

"Joan.....Of"....game not over yet. For the steal and a tie, Calena says "Jump Around" by House of Payne....tie game! Final question, for the win:

1998: "Fashion shoots with Beck and Hanson/Courtney Love and Marilyn Mansion/You're all fakes, run to your mansions/Come around, we'll kick your ass in"

"You Get What You Give"....by The New Radicals, that is correct to send Three Men and a Little Lazy into the semifinal match against Twisted Misters!
