"That's the Question" 10/13

On this potentially unlucky day (October the 13th), tonight's players are Deborah Prayver from L.A. (who is a fitness instructor and is eight months pregnant at the time of the taping of this episode) and Brandee Goss (who is a personal record supervisor and is a fan of the game Bingo). Here's the first big board of Round 1:

_ _ _ _/_ _/_ _ _/_ _ _/_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _/

_ _ _ _/_ _ _ _/_ _ _/_ _/_ _ _ _ _ _ _/

_ _ _ _ _?

ANSWER: Beverly Hills

After Goss knows about the Jaguar brand of cars, we now have...

_ _ _ T/IS/T _ _/_ N L Y/_ M _ R I _ _ N/

_ I T Y/T _ _ T/_ _ S/_ N/I R _ N I _ N/

M _ T _ R?

ANSWER: Beverly Hills

...I'm not sure about the last two words. Goss leads 11-8, and Prayver has the next mini-question.

(NHWTEDRRAA)- "Kenneth, what is the frequency?"- that's the 1986 question posed by an assilance of what former CBS anchorman? She blanks out- it was Dan Rather. A W is the first letter of the question.
(ENLLDRIDSC)- What word refers to both a lopsided election or a large amount of dirt moving downhill? Goss says MUDSLIDE, but it's LANDSLIDE. She misses out on two points, because two C's pop up into the question.
(TNEORNETI)- In 1969, a computer at UCLA contacted another at Stanford demonstrating the first use of what? Prayver gets Internet for two points and two O's, taking her to 10.
(EHMNEIM)- What blonde rapper has an evil alter ego named "Slim Shady"? Goss gets Eminem no problem for four H's and points, giving her 15, but she screws up on the puzzle by saying WHAT IS THE ONLY AMERICAN CITY THAT HIS and stopping there.
(IRLRVROSH)- Before I say the question, this question for Prayver is worth nine points. In 1993, what nation was formed along with the Czech Republic? She can't come up with Slovakia, blowing a golden opportunity. Nine A's go on the board. The next mini-question is the last one for this board.
(RDMSAEHEANOSSLEEH)- In "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow", Ichabod Crane flips his lid when he sees what villain? Goss blanks out- it was the Headless Horseman, so no one gets the five-point puzzle solve bonus here. The big question was WHAT IS THE ONLY AMERICAN CITY THAT HAS AN IRANIAN MAYOR? The last two words were really tough to figure out without those A's, IMO. Here's the second board:

_ _ _ _/_ _ _ _ _ _ _/_ _ _ _/_ _ _/_ _/_ _ _/

_ _ _/_ _/_ _ _ _ _ _?

ANSWER: Reba Mcentire

After the W's pop up, we have...

W _ _ _/_ O _ N _ _ _/S _ _ _/W _ S/_ N/_ E _/

OWN/_ W/S _ _ _ O M?

ANSWER: Reba Mcentire

...I know this now. Goss only leads by a point, 18-17, as the other has the next scramble.

(UHIMQAUT)- What small, citrus-like fruit has a comical-sounding name that's Chinese for "gold orange"? Prayver gets KUMQUAT for two I's and points, and now she has the one-point lead at 19.
(DISCURA)- In geometry, what straight line connects the center of a circle to its circumference? Goss gets RADIUS for three C's and the lead back with 21. She then solves WHAT COUNTRY STAR WAS IN HER OWN CW SITCOM? to go to 26. Last board of the first round:

_ _ _ _/_ _/_ _ _ _ _ _ _/_ _ _ _ _ _ _/_ _ _ _ _/

_ _ _ _ _ _/_ _/_/_ _ _ _ _ _/_ _ _ _ _ _ _?

ANSWER: "Bonanza"

After Goss doesn't know about Hans Christian Andersen, the board now reads...

W H _ _/_ V/W E _ _ E R _/_ _ _ R R E _/_ _ R _ E/

_ R E E _ E/_ _/_/C _ _ _ _ E/R _ _ C H E R?

ANSWER: "Bonanza"

...all I don't know is the star of the said show. At this point, Goss leads by three, 29-26. Prayver has the next jumble.

(NEALONLDAKS)- What brand of butter features a kneeling Native American holding a box of butter on its packaging? She says Land O' Lakes for four N's and a one-point lead at 30.
(NIUFSLO)- In the "H Bomb" and inside the sun, what process combines Hydrogen nuclei into Helium? It's also the name of a Ford automobile. Goss has FUSION for two L's and the one-point lead at 31.
(DCDGAANIR)- Named for a British officer, what type of sweater opens all the way down the front? Prayver ties it up with Cardigan, as a D goes on the board, located at the end of the fourth word.
(AELSBKTAOLB)- The Sky and the Storm are women's professional teams in what sport? Goss has BASKETBALL for an L and the one-point lead once again.
(TFLRYYTRNAL)- What wheelchair-bound publisher exposes Congressional scandals as well as nude models? Prayver gets Larry Flint for six points and 37 total. Also, six T's go on the board.
(HEGCTASER)- America's largest union, the NEA, is best known for representing what kind of worker? Goss doesn't know it's TEACHER. A G goes on the board, meaning we know that the "Bonanza" star is Lorne Greene.
(NDIIAS)- The film industry of what country is known as "Bollywood"? Prayver has India for three S's and points, and she then solves WHAT TV WESTERN STARRED LORNE GREENE AS A CATTLE RANCHER? to end the round with 45. Goss still has 32.

Round 2's opening board:

_ _ _ _/_ _ _ _ _ _ _/_ _ _ _ _ _ _/_ _/

"_ _ _ _ _/_ _ _"?

ANSWER: _ _ _ _ _/_ _ _ _ _

After Prayver knows about Cubic Zirconia, the board now shows...

W H _ T/_ _ T R E S S/S T _ R R E D/_ _/

"_ O R _ _/R _ E"?

ANSWER: S _ _ _ _/_ _ E _ D

...I don't know the show, nor the actress in question. Prayver is starting to run away with this, now leading 63 to the reverse for Goss (36). After Prayver hits 75, we now have...

WHAT/A _ T R E S S/STARRED/I _/

"_ O R _ A/R A E"?

ANSWER: S A _ _ _/_ I E _ D

...she says the puzzle is WHAT ACTRESS STARRED IN "NORMA RAE" + SALLY FIELD...and she's up to 85! We have time for one more board in this maingame. Here it is:

_ _ _/_ _ _ _ _/_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _/_ _/_ _ _ _/

_ _ _ _ _ _/_ _ _ _ _ _ _/_ _ _/'_ _ _/_ _/

_ _ _ _ _'?

ANSWER: "_ _ _/_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _/_ _ _"

When we get to Speed-Up mode, here's how it reads now:

T _ E/T _ T L E/C _ A _ A C T E _/_ F/W _ A T/

_ _ _ _ _ _/C L A _ _ _ C/W A _/' _ _ T/_ F/

_ _ G _ T'?

ANSWER: "T _ E/_ _ _ _ _ _ _ L E/_ A _"

Goss rings in when the full question is shown, which was THE TITLE CHARACTER OF WHAT HORROR CLASSIC WAS 'OUT OF SIGHT'?, but doesn't know the answer. Prayver knows it's "The Invisible Man", but she's a second too late. She still wins, though, with 89.

After 89 seconds expire, Prayver has to solve this...

_ H _ T/_ _ _ _ T _ _ E/_ _/T H _ E E/

H _ N _ _ E _/T _ _ E _/_ _ E E T E _/T H _ N/

_ _ _ _ _?

ANSWER: _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _

...and with a crappy setup like that, she unsurprisingly is stumped. The question was WHAT ADDITIVE IS THREE HUNDRED TIMES SWEETER THAN SUGAR?, and the answer was saccharine.
