2/13/2008 Results- Will the Million Dollar Mission end the same day as the Writer's Strike?

WWTBAM: We start the day off with John Leonard from Mount Sinai, NY. He's an attorney there. $16,000 question:

Who is the only U.S. president to have held the rank of five-star general?

A: Ulysses S. Grant
B: Dwight D. Eisenhower
C: Zachary Taylor
D: Andrew Jackson

He asks the audience here. 79% said Eisenhower while 16 % said Grant. He agrees with Eisenhower to go to $16,000! For $25,000:

Despite their tasty-sounding name, sweetbreads are typically made from what not-so-appetizing parts of an animal?

A: Thyroid and liver
B: Pancreas and thymus
C: Kidney and testes
D: Intestine and pituitary gland

With his gut nowhere on the board, he calls his brother Jim for help. He says pancreas and thymus with definite authority, and the player agrees...

A: Thyroid and liver
B: Pancreas and thymus
C: Kidney and testes
D: Intestine and pituitary gland

...he's up to $25,000! After switching, here's his $50,000 question:

Though they don't smell quite as pretty, onions are commonly classified in the same family as which of these flowers?

A: Geranium
B: Lily
C: Crocus
D: Iris

The 50:50 leaves geranium and lily. He locks in lily....

A: Geranium
B: Lily

...he picked the right flower for $50,000! He immediately takes that amount home after not knowing the answer to this $100,000 movie question:

Featured in the horror classic "Alien", the spacecrafts Nostromo and Narcissus take their names from works by what author?

A: Theodore Dreiser
B: Henry James
C: E.M. Forster
D: Joseph Conrad

The answer was Conrad.

Let's see if Bimbi Shabi from Brooklyn will be back tomorrow. Her $1,000 question is this:

Which of these animal names appears in Roget's Thesaurus as a synonym for "tattletale"?

A: Canary
B: Fox
C: Guppy
D: Honeybee

After polling the audience, 86% said canary. She agrees and is right to guarantee $1,000. To return tomorrow:

The 2007 game show "Don't Forget the Lyrics!" has roughly the same premise as what other show?

A: "1 vs. 100"
B: "Power of 10"
C: "Identity"
D: "The Singing Bee"

I would've killed her if she had missed this one, but she says "The Singing Bee" to return tomorrow!

TPIR: Today's opening contestants are Bradley Bond (from the Univ. of Illinois), Amanda Hodge, Vincent DiNova and Nicholas Conway. The first IUFB is stuff for your gym.

Nicholas: $1,850
Vincent: $1,400
Amanda: $1,700
Bradley: BUCK

ARP: $1,094, so the Illinois student will try for $1,000 and more in Clock Game. First up is a pair of bean bag chairs marked at $798. He starts with
$500...$520...$600...$700...$800...$750...$770...$780...$790...and one ups from there. The water walking system is next, and its price is $899. He has 17.5 seconds to do it in. He starts with $1,100, then $900...$800...$850...$860...$870...$890...and one ups from there to win with seven seconds left! After his second bid on the chairs, he really played this game well!

Christine Rochar then comes on down and the second IUFB is a bed. The winner also gets $40 worth of Os-Cal.

Christine: $1,200 (STAGE GARF)
Nicholas: $1,450
Vincent: $975 (STAGE GARF)
Amanda: $1,451

Hodge wins by default, as the ARP was $2,400. BTW, she's also a college student. She now plays Range Game for a Ford Fusion! The range is $18,300-$18,900. She stops at $18,481-$18,631 and wins the $18,495 car!

Next to get out of their seat in the audience is Eric Fredrick and the third IUFB is a set of jewelry. $40 of Gold Bond Lotion also goes to the winner.

Eric: $575
Christine: $550
Nicholas: $500
Vincent: $580

ARP: $772, meaning DiNova goes to a Swap Meet, where he can win a vaccum, a dual trike, a sofa and a washer/dryer. He must match the ARP of the vaccum to the ARP of one of the other three prizes. He chooses the sofa, which is $963...but not the vaccum. It was $1,399, and the prize he should've chosen instead was the trike. The ARP of the washer/dryer remained hidden from view. Not sure if Roger wanted this won today.

SSD1: The only loser this half spins 60 cents. The student from Illinois spins 85 cents! The female student also spins that to force a college spin-off! He spins 95, while the lady spins 45 cents, so he's in the Showcase!

Next player is Keri Ann Mowry and the fourth IUFB is a set of digital cameras.

Keri Ann: $850
Eric: $500
Christine: $1,000 (she wanted to say $1 at first)
Nicholas: BUCK

ARP: $680, meaning Fredrick plays Check Out (first playing this season, I think) for a trip to Aspen worth $4,010. The products today are popcorn, V8 juice, Hot Pockets, HBP medicine and hearing aid. His guesses are as follows:

1. $1.99
2. $2.50
3. $3.00
4. $7.99
5. $4.00
TOTAL GUESS: $19.48

The actual total of the products must be within $17.48-$21.48.

1. $2.39
2. $3.15
3. $2.49
4. $6.29
5. $8.99
TOTAL: $23.31

Next to "Come on Down" is Leslie Royal and the next IUFB is an area rug. The winner also has $40 of NutraMist coming their way.

Leslie: $825
Christine: $1,400
Nicholas: $675
Keri Ann: $1,100

ARP: $855, so Royal will play Flip Flop for a TV. Board:

2498

My guess is $4,298, and she agrees...she wins!

The last player is Wednesday Phillips (great name, because today is Wednesday!) and the final IUFB is a dinette. The winner also gets $40 worth of Garlique and will have a shot at a car.

Wednesday: $890
Christine: $999
Nicholas: $1,100
Keri Ann: $1,101

ARP: $1,195, so Conway heads to the First Four Breakfast Club, Wednesday goes back to where she came from, and Mowry gets a chance at a Jeep Wrangler in Lucky Seven! This is the first time in a while this game is the last one of the day! First number is 2 of course. Her second number pick is 1...

$ 2 2, _ _ _

...it's 2 instead. She says 4 next...

$ 2 2, 4 _ _

...bullseye! Next pick is 6....

$ 2 2, 4 7 _

...7! She has $5 left. She says 5 last and wins the $22,479 Jeep!

SSD2: The only loser this half spins a nickel...and 20 for a quarter total. Royal spins 95 cents! Mowry spins 75...and goes over, so Royal's off to the Showcase!

For our first Showcase, we meey Safety Sally. First, she recommends wearing bubble wrap while staying away from some garden equipment. Second, she suggests that you wear tons of sunscreen while in the Caribbean. Finally, she knows that you may need to cover your ears to endure the screams from the audience every time they show off cars like a Dodge Avenger! The Illinois student bids $24,500. Royal then visits the First Bank of Price, where she could take away cookware, a Playstation 3 game console and a pair of motorcycles. She bids $16,500.

ARP for him: $30,721, a difference of $6,221. That trip must've been pretty expensive. Let's start with the first 2 digits of the lady's Showcase...

$ 1 6, _ _ _

...looking good. The last two numbers...

$ 1 6, _ 4 8

...if that middle digit is 5, 6 or 7, she's a Double Showcase Winner. If it's 8 or 9, she just wins her Showcase. Anything lower than all of that and she loses.....

$ 1 6, 1 4 8

...OUCH. Had she bid an even 16 grand, she would've been the latest Double Showcase Winner on the show. Instead, she leaves with $5,193 in stuff while the Illinois student is our champion with a grand total of $34,512 in cash and prizes!

They're in good shape to get a fourth victory here. Sarah says that bottom answer is getting along with the animals...no. Emily then tries building his shelter...no. WHEN THEY WERE TEENS
RIGHT ON THE MONEY

AMERICANA
SHORT STORIES
A, B, C, D THEN F (the first correct reponse begins with A, the second with a B, and so on)

Early on, Bennici hits the Daily Double under the $600 clue in Short Stories. With just $400, she wagers the full $1,000 on this:

This Poe story mentions "a low, dull, quick sound...as a watch makes when enveloped in cotton".

"What is The Tall-Tale Heart?"...right to go to $1,400! At the first break, she's still ahead with $4,000. The man in the middle has $3,200 and the other lady has $1,200. After the round, the only man on the panel is now ahead with $4,400. Bennici is now in second with $3,800 and Katie has $3,400.

DJ! categories:

THE CIVIL WAR
HIGH SCHOOL MUSICALS
POTPOURRI
OFFICIAL CANADIAN PROVINCE THINGS
VERY SUPERSTICIOUS
9-LETTER WORDS

Katie starts to catch fire about midway in the round, being the first to hit five figures. The other two at one point were at about $6,000 each. Bennici later decides to go Daily Double Hunting in Very Superstitious, as both Daily Doubles are still in play at this point. Soon after, just two full categories remain- Civil War and Official Canadian Province Things. There's a Daily Double hidden somewhere in each of those categories. Here are the scores at this moment:

Katie: $13,000
Maria: $8,600
Will: $8,000

First clue in the Civil War:

Robert E. Lee's nephew, Fitzhugh Lee, was a major general during both the Civil War and this 1898 war.

Katie says "What is the Spanish-American War?"...right to go to $13,400. $800 clue there:

"Quaker guns" were really logs that the south painted to look like these big mounted weapons.

Bennici rings in with "What are cannons?"...correct to go to $9,400. Middle clue:

This city in Northern Virginia was the site of two battles known in the north as the Battles of Bull Run.

"What is Manassas?"...right for $16,600! Final clue in the category:

The man says "What is the Pacific?"...right to end the round with $10,400!

FJ! category: The Animal World.

C. Familiaris, it has one of the largest size ranges, from a two-pound Mexican variety to 200-pounders.

Nick Philip and Mollie Haycock could be eliminated tonight. The man in the middle tonight wrote down "What is a dog?"...woof, woof, he's right to double to $20,800! Bennici said the opposite, cat, and wagered $3,500, so she's down to $9,900 and has been eliminated from the tournament, as is Haycock. Those two leave with $5,000 each.
