"Deal"/"Catch 21" 8/30

LMAD: The 18th taped episode at The Tropicana in Las Vegas is the aired first season finale, and these three people are here to try to make the most of it- Virginia (dressed as an Egyptian), Adolfo (dressed as a doctor) & Billy (dressed as a Rockabilly). They each get to pick a curtain:

Virginia: #3
Adolfo: #1
Billy: #2

Behind two of them is the exact same thing. Adolfo keeps his curtain for $500...but behind it is a donkey, so he's ELIMINATED. Billy doesn't play the odds and sells his curtain for the same amount of money, so that will cost him...the Royal Enfield motorcycle ($6,999). Finally, Virginia originally wants $1,000, but she gives it right back for what's behind her curtain...a blue version of the same motorcycle!

Deal #2 is the Guess the Money in the Box Deal. First, Clothield (dressed as a human target) sees a lot of $10 bills in the small box Jonathan Mangum brings down and gets a $300 range. She can either try for that money, take a sure $300 or go for what's inside the big box (Alison Fiori). Clothield goes for the money box...and she definitely passes up the $1,800 iMac. Her guess is $2,550...NOT EVEN CLOSE. But she still leaves with $500, and this deal will continue later.

The last featured couple of the season are Lori (dressed as a loaded hot dog) & Richard (dressed as a gorilla), and it's time for the prize version of "The Newlywed Game". Lori gets $300 to begin with.

Round 1 (Big box):
A: Sony HD camcorder ($750)
B: BBQ island ($4K)
Richard's guess: Camcorder (because he already has a grill)- CORRECT

Round 2:
A: $2.5K
B: Trip to Palm Springs ($5,888)(Curtain #1)
Richard's guess: Trip (because he thinks they already have a ton of money)- RIGHT

Time now for The Big Risk with Curtain #2, but they're not taking it...and they miss out on 1,300 ears of corn!

Next, Keith (dressed as a rooster) gets a chance to buy one of the three curtains for a grand. Two have $250 behind them, while the other has five large. If he goes for the $5K and chooses it, he'll get a chance to double it to 10. He buys Curtain #2...NO, but in addition to the $250, he gets to chicken dance with Alison. The $5K was behind #1.

The next two traders are David (dressed as Don King) & Barbara (dressed as a graduate in a black suit). They first both turn down the small box (Jonathan) after being each paid $700...inside it was at least a selection of designer sunglasses worth $1,158. And inside one of the pairs was...a $1.5K bonus. They also turn down what was behind Curtain #1...a swingin' boat anchor!

Let's move on to Barbara (dressed as an All-American superhero). She can either have the bankroll with a $50 bill on the outside or the small box's contents (Alison), which start with a blue Coach Tribecca handbag valued at $298. Barbara passes the bag to Nicole (dressed as a kissing booth) and then rejects Curtain #1...that curtain had an Antigua adventure worth $7,488, so Barb leaves with $150. Afterwards, Nicole keeps her bag and turns down the middle curtain...because she said goodbye to the ZONK pinata, she also wins the Honda InSight EX (Std., Nav.) behind Curtain #3 ($23,100)!

Before somebody plays for the last Big Deal of the season, we need to get another round of the Box of Money Deal in. Mary (dressed as a penguin) also sees a box of $10 bills in the small box (Alison) and gets the same guessing range to work with, unless she wants $300 or what's behind Curtain #1. She picks the curtain...and could've won $3,460, but she doesn't go home empty-handed- she's won a pair of Cannondale bicycles worth $2,598.

THE BIG DEAL: The last BD of Season 1 is a Honda Accord EX-L V6 Sedan with a value of $29,105, and going for it will be Virginia. Her final guess is Door #3...but she completely misses it and leaves with $1,445.

Door #1: CAR
Door #2: Brown living room group ($8,162)

Well, that concludes the first season of the newest incarnation of "Let's Make a Deal". For most of the run, the show was in Vegas, but since last Spring, they're taping at the Sunset Bronson Studios in Los Angeles. Whereever they were, they produced lots of good (and some bad) memorable moments, including:

-The near $39K BD win by Amy from December 7th
-The budget blowout days on November 18 & 19
-A few contestants from earlier versions playing again
-Drew Carey's appearance from January 13th
-The first-ever "Card Sharks" win on April 7th (which was also the first aired episode from L.A.)
-The holiday-themed episodes
-A $36K Camaro being unexpectedly passed up during one playing of Spell Me a Deal last Friday
-Three traders during the season giving up cars for a chance at the BD with Door #1...and they all went home with the small deal

But who can ever forget the week of March 22-26 in Vegas, when the "Deal" king himself Monty Hall guest-hosted one deal every day that week! And on that Wednesday, during the first playing of the modernized version of the Cash Register game, Randy & Chanell pulled off possibly the greatest comeback in "Deal" history when they became the first ones ever to hit both of the bad signs right off the bat and won a car as a result!

More cash, prizes & surprises await when Wayne Brady, Jonathan Mangum & Tiffany Coyne (with Alison originally being in her place) return next season, presumably on September 20th. Until then, as Monty used to say, "Happy dealing"!

The dog owners have to be inside the hula hoop in order for a shot to count. After this challenge, the lowest-scoring team is eliminated.

Like the last challenge, the last-place team after this challenge will be out of this game.

3. Michael & Abbie- 330 (590)

Each successfully deposited tennis ball at the end of the course is worth 10 points, and the hurdles are also worth 10 apiece. Whoever has the highest overall score after this is done will become the champions.

1. Michael & Abbie- 230 (820)

2. Michelle & Bob- 360 (775)

That means Lauren & Keir need at least 37 balls to win the golden fire hydrant...

...and after three runs of the course, THEY DO SO RIGHT ON THE MONEY!

On "Late Show with David Letterman" this week...

...Pat Sajak was referred to twice. On Tuesday's episode, at the end of a sketch in which Dave was talking to some traffic guy, Pat was called a MUSLIM.

And on Wednesday, just before the first commercial break, announcer Alan Kalter thought Pat would win a dance-off over Alex Trebek!

The yellow balls were worth five, the beachballs were worth 10 and the sole red ball (dubbed the money ball) at the end of the rack was worth 25. "Doubles Poker Championship" 8/28

Preliminary Game #5's Teams:

Howard Lederer & Phil Galfond
Mike Matusow & Phil Laak
Andy Bloch & Annie Duke
David Chiu & Erick Lindgren

The blinds in this game start at 500/1,000.

1.

Laak & Matusow: (AH)(3H)
Galfond & Lederer: RED JACKS

POT: 6,300
THE FLOP: (7D)(7C)(5C)

After Galfond & Lederer bet 4K, Laak & Matusow raise to 10 grand...and Galfond & Lederer re-raise to 45,200, which is enough to win them the 61.5K pot!

2.

Bloch & Duke: (QH)(JS)
Laak & Matusow: (KS)(10C)

POT: 6.5K
THE FLOP: (10S)(7D)(5D)

Bloch & Duke bet 3.5K before Laak & Matusow raises them to 10,700...and steal the 20,700 pot.

3.

Laak & Matusow (ALL-IN): (KH)(10C)
Galfond & Lederer: (AS)(9S)

Laak & Matusow take their timeout just before we proceed.

POT: 62,600
THE FLOP: (3H)(AD)(6D)

Laak & Matusow are going to need back-to-back runners to make a straight or get two more 10s or Kings just to stay in it.

TURN: QUEEN OF CLUBS (a Jack is needed)
RIVER: 5 OF SPADES- LAAK & MATUSOW ZERO OUT (and they both stay at four points apiece)

4.

Galfond & Lederer: (AD)(6D)
Chiu & Lindgren: (KD)(JH)

POT: 13,800
THE FLOP: (7D)(10S)(9H)

Both teams have an inside straight draw. Following Galfond & Lederer betting 5,200, Chiu & Lindgren issue a 13,700 raise...and they win the 32,700 pot on the steal.

At this moment, the blinds are worth 1.5/3K.

On the fifth hand, after Chiu & Lindgren take their TO, they fold and give a BLITZ win to Bloch & Duke for a 34,700 pot (they went ALL-IN).

6.

Galfond & Lederer (they also use their TO): (AD)(6D)
Bloch & Duke (ALL-IN again): (QS)(8H)

POT: 87,400
THE FLOP: (5D)(2H)(AC)
TURN: 7 OF SPADES- BLOCH & DUKE ELIMINATED
RIVER: 10 OF DIAMONDS

Duke earns her first four points, while Bloch doubles up to eight.

HEADS' UP CHIP COUNT:

Galfond & Lederer: 116K
Chiu & Lindgren: 84K

The blinds have reached the 3/6K level.

Galfond & Lederer BLITZ a pot 200 shy of 100 grand following a re-raise of theirs to 83,800.

8.

Galfond & Lederer: (JC)(5S)
Chiu & Lindgren: (AH)(6C)

POT: 116,800
THE FLOP: (4H)(7D)(2D)- DUD
TURN: 6 OF DIAMONDS

To win this match, Galfond & Lederer need a three, eight or Jack on the river...

RIVER: 3 OF SPADES- WIN!

...and they got it! Galfond, Lederer & Lindgren are all tied for the lead with 31 each, while Chiu now has 15.

Preliminary Game #6's Teams:

Annette Obrestad & Huck Seed
David Oppenheim & Gavin Smith
Tony Guoga & Vivek Rajkumar
Justin Smith & Tom Dwan

1.

Dwan & J. Smith: (JH)(6H)
Obrestad & Seed: (5H)(4S)

POT: 4,900
THE FLOP: (6C)(3H)(4H)

Dwan & Smith have an instant heart flush draw and top pair, but Obrestad & Seed have middle pair and an open-ended straight draw. They both check.

TURN: 5 OF CLUBS

Obrestad & Seed now lead with two pair, and they raise to 8,700 after Dwan & Smith make a 2,700 bet...and the continuation call is made. If a two or seven's the river card for this hand and it's not a Heart, we might have a split pot.

RIVER: 2 OF SPADES- SPLIT POT

2.

Dwan & J. Smith: (AD)(9H)
G. Smith & Oppenheim: (JS)(8H)

POT: 9,600
THE FLOP: (4H)(8S)(2H)

Both of these teams wager 5,700 each.

TURN: KING OF CLUBS- DUD
RIVER: JACK OF CLUBS- ANOTHER DUD

After a TO is called by Dwan & Smith...they and the other team throw another 12,600 apiece into the pot, meaning Oppenheim & Smith have won a total pot of 46,200.

3.

Dwan & J. Smith (ALL-IN): (QH)(8D)
G. Smith & Oppenheim: (9D)(6D)

POT: 64,700
THE FLOP: (9C)(10H)(8H)

Oppenheim & Smith lead with the middle pairing and a gutshot straight draw; Dwan & Smith have the low pair, but they also have an inside straight draw to work with.

TURN: 4 OF HEARTS

Add a flush draw to Dwan & Smith's possibilities.

RIVER: 6 OF CLUBS- DWAN & J. SMITH GET GOOSEEGGED (this is the second time in a row this has happened to Dwan, but J. Smith remains at 11)

The blinds are currently at the 1.5/3K barrier.

4.

Obrestad & Seed: THE BLACK ACES
Oppenheim & Smith: (9H)(7H)

POT: 33,900
THE FLOP: (6D)(3C)(5C)

Oppenheim & Smith have a chance to make a straight with this hand; they've got a double belly-buster showing. And they force Obrestad & Seed ALL-IN.

FINAL TOTAL FOR THIS POT: 121,100

TURN: 2 OF HEARTS- DUD

If the river card isn't a four or eight, Obrestad & Seed stay in the game.

RIVER: 7 OF DIAMONDS- DOUBLER!

5.

Obrestad & Seed: (10S)(9S)
Oppenheim & Smith (ALL-IN after their TO): (AC)(9C)

POT: 96,600
THE FLOP: (6H)(4D)(6S)
TURN: 8 OF HEARTS

A seven or 10 will be bad news for Oppenheim & Smith.

CARD: 7 OF HEARTS- OPPENHEIM & SMITH ELIMINATED

Gavin Smith's up to 15, while Oppenheim gets on the scoreboard.

As we reach heads' up, the blinds go up to 2/4K.

6.

Obrestad & Seed: (AS)(3C)
Guoga & Rajkumar: (9H)(5H)

POT: 18,600
THE FLOP: (3D)(6S)(4C)
TURN: KING OF HEARTS- DUD

As both teams wager 15K a pop, Guoga & Rajkumar are working on an open-ender, whereas Obrestad & Seed have just the bottom pairing.

RIVER: 10 OF DIAMONDS- ANOTHER DUD

Following Guoga & Rajkumar's TO, they go for the bluff by betting 27K...but they're UNSUCCESSFUL as Obrestad & Seed call and win the 102,600 pot! After Guoga & Rajkumar double up via a BLITZ, here's the next hand:

8.

Obrestad & Seed: (10D)(6C)
Guoga & Rajkumar (ALL-IN): THE BLACK EIGHTS

POT: 120,200
THE FLOP: (3D)(2D)(AD)

One more diamond and this match's over.

TURN: 5 OF HEARTS

That means both teams are now eligible to make a straight.

RIVER: 9 OF DIAMONDS- OBRESTAD & SEED WIN WITH A FLUSH!

Seed has the lead to himself for the moment with the two-match maximum of 40! Obrestad & Rakjumar both follow him with 31 and Guoga has his first 11.

LMAD: A clue-filled deal comes Jeff & Megan's way (Megan's in a pink outfit); they're a Canadian couple. Here are all their clues:

Eclipse gum: CASH
Curtain #1: $1,000
Curtain #2: $2,000
Curtain #3: ???

They originally turn down the gum for what's behind Curtain #1, but to end this deal, they take the gum back...and they've got $2,400. But let's see everything else:

Curtain #1: Toyota Corolla ($16,750)
Curtain #2: Trip to Whistler, BC and ski equipment ($12,412)
Curtain #3: Camel

The second deal starts with Monica (dressed as a construction person). Jonathan Mangum brings down the small box with a golden envelope. She can either have the money inside that envelope or what's inside the box, which could either be some broken china or a trip to said country. She's also going for some money...and she's won $1,500 of it. In the box was...BROKEN China! This deal will continue later on in the show.

Randi (dressed as a Dalmatian) starts Deal #3 with $800, and she buys the two items inside the small box...they're round-trip airline tickets to anywhere she chooses in this country, along with luggage, for a total value of $2,600. Ed then gets a four-wheel clue for Curtain #1. He could've had $500 per wheel instead, but he instead goes for possibly the Corolla...alas, it's a DUD Mustang Convertible from the '80s with its hood on fire.

As Deal #2 continues, Alison gets the small box down this time and she's holding a silver envelope. The box Rosary sees has either some grease or a trip to Greece. She tries for the trip...and she's cruising to Greece; this cruise's worth $17,341! Left behind was a $75 check. There's one more round of this deal to come.

The next contestant is Helen (who's dressed as a Cheesehead), and she's starting off likely the season's final edition of Spell Me a Deal. The first letter on the board today is C, and she gives Curtain #3 to Richard. He turns down $600 and $700 to receive...a Sony Bravia 40" LCD HDTV, a Sony Blu-Ray home theter & a pair of designer chairs, all worth $2,846. The second letter turns out to be an A, and she hands control of the big box to Jenny (who's wearing a blue wig) before she rejects it for $800...and she would've had to try and play a BROKEN arcade & pinball game from 1982! Finally, the third letter is M, but Helen unfortunately walks with two grand instead of one...and to make matters worse, she didn't turn down the $20,445 Camry, she just gave back a $36K CHEVROLET CAMARO 2SS (Curtain #3).

It's going to be hard to recover from that, but we must move on to the Poetry Corner Deal. Up first is Gerald from Winnipeg (who's wearing a blue/red wig), and the key rhyming word that comes out of Jonathan's mouth is "rah". The mystery prize is behind Curtain #1, and he goes for it after turning down Wayne Brady's offers of $500 & $600...it's a $6,195 spa! Here comes Erin (dressed as a ladybug), and whatever's behind Curtain #3 rhymes with "like" according to Mr. Brady. She thinks a nice trike's back there, but after talking it out with her boyfriend and hearing offers of $600, $800 & $900 (who's wearing a black outfit with a red bow-tie that has white dots on it), she turns it down for a grand...and it's a good thing she did- it was a ZONK!

Before a potentially very expensive Big Deal of the Day is played for, Jacqulyn gets the choice of either the silver envelope or the small box, which has either a turkey or a trip to there. She wants the dough...but the check's worth $200, so she misses out on a $14,345 Turkish holiday in Istanbul.

THE BIG DEAL: Believe it or not, Rosary will go for this, and it's worth in cash and/or prize (s)...$36,364. She hopes Door #3 will make her the second-biggest winner on this version of "Deal". As we open Door #1...she gets REALLY BAD NEWS- in that door is just a blue Electrolux washer/dryer set worth $2,598, so her GAME'S OVER. That means she automatically loses this behind Door #2 as the BD...not a boat as I suspected, but THE BANK VAULT!!! OUCH. But she still leaves as the day's top winner with a stay at the Windjammer Landing valued at $6,984.

We could've had a record-breaking day, but as it is, an average $24,225 in cash and merchandise was given away this morning. Maybe the aired season finale on Monday will be much better (or a similar episode like this next season).

TPIR: The "Back to School" banner underneath the show's logo is yellow on green, and the first four college students coming on down are Matthew Sautel from Arizona State University, Brianna Jones, Mohammed Ibrahim from Michigan State University & Tonie Hairston from the University of Central Florida. And today's episode is pretty much the last chance for yours truly & octavarium64 to win the last skunking bet of the season, based on the footage we've seen about the September 15th episode on the TV prizes offered on some previous episodes (which will include a trip to Nashville).

First comes a personal electric transporter driven by Manuela Arbelaez in front of Contestant's Row.

Muhammad: $900
Tonie: $1,200
Brianna: $800
Matthew: $1,201

ARP: $1,599

Matthew, who's majoring in Chemical Engineering, plays Pushover for a trip to the Pueblo Bonito Susnet Beach Resort & Spa in Cabo San Lucas (Lanisha Cole at Door #2). Board:

310940461

He pushes to $4,046...

310940461

...well, so much for the skunk bet- he's won the vacation!

Headed down fifth is Jacquelyn Hazard from Bloomsburg University and the second IUFB is the Park & Sun Sports 3-in-1 game table (Lanisha behind the Giant Price Tag).

Jacquelyn: $599
Muhammad: $500
Tonie: $502
Brianna: BUCK

ARP: $587

Jacquelyn was over by $12, so Tonie will play Lucky $even for a Mazda3 (Std., Tray; this one's in black instead of green and red)(Manuela). I highly doubt she'll pull a Rashanda Dickson here after what happened on the $23,391 Jeep Wrangler. Her second number guess is three, but it's one, so there go two dollars. She guesses four for the third digit...

$ 2 1 , 2 _ _

...and she loses another pair of dollars. She next chooses seven...

$ 2 1 , 2 9 _

...she's still alive with a buck remaining. Finally, she tries five...

$ 2 1 , 2 9 5

...WIN!

(Note: Hondas will be offered on the aired season finale.)

Our third winner of the day might be Miles Mayasan (who's waving a yellow T-shirt) and the third IUFB is a Motorola droid with the one-year nationwide calling & data plan (Amber Donaldson & Manuela).

Miles: $455
Brianna: $600
Jacquelyn: $450
Muhammad: $50

ARP: $1,370

Brianna from Kent State University is about to play Pl!nko (and this is the last taped playing with the electronic money readout)! Today's SPs are modeled by Lanisha.

1. Twin coffee maker
IS NOT: $35
PICK: 5- $25

2. 900-watt black/red/white microwave oven
IS NOT: $60
PICK: 6- $65

3. Rubik's Cube clock
IS NOT: $28
PICK: 8- $18

4. Vivitar digital camera
IS NOT: $95
PICK: 5- $90

Her other three Pl!nko Chips are brought to her by Manuela.

1. $500 (Left)
2. $10K
3. $1K (Right)
4. $10K

That makes her the biggest Pl!nko winner of the season with $21.5K!

SHOWCASE SHOWDOWN #1:
Matthew ($5,645): Dime + 45 = $.55
Tonie ($21,882): $.95
Brianna ($22,978): 15 + Quarter = $.40- TONIE ADVANCES TO SHOWCASE

Leaving the audience next is Tonya Washington from UCLA (and she throws her yellow T-shirt to Drew Carey) and the fourth IUFB is an Onkyo 7.1 home theater system that includes the 160 GB iPod Classic (Lanisha inside the clam).

Tonya: $1,500
Jacquelyn: $1,200
Muhammad: $1,202
Miles: BUCK

ARP: $1,148

Miles, also a UCLA student, plays the Balance Game (Manuela) for the pair of Joyner sand buggies (Amber at Door #3). The last three numbers are -998.

DOLLAR VALUES AVAILABLE: $1K, $6K & $7K

He LOSES the $7,998 buggies, since he overpriced them by a grand.

Hoping to also strike it rich this morning is the University of Michigan's Eric Meyer and the next IUFB is a selection of American Apparel (Amber behind splitting sign).

Eric: $550
Tonya: $800
Jacquelyn: $600

Muhammad: BUCK

ARP: $1,037

Tonya, who wants to help enroll her friend Seth in UCLA, plays Check-Out for a Volkswagen Jetta California Edition Limited Sedan (Std., AT, iPod)(Lanisha at Door #3) worth $20,344. The groceries in play are 200 sheets of college-ruled paper, a box of Cheez-Its, a Red Bull Energy Drink, a bag of 40 Totino's Pepperoni Pizza Rolls & a box of 12 Microban Ticonderoga Antimicrobial Pencils. My guess for the total value of these products is $30.

Guesses:
Paper: $1.50
Crackers: $3.25
Drink: $2
Rolls: $5
Pencils: $2
TOTAL GUESS: $13.75

ANSWERS:
Paper: $4.64
Crackers: $4.49
Drink: $3.69
Rolls: $4.89- GAME OVER ALREADY

Pencils: $5.62

ACTUAL TOTAL: $23.33
DIFFERENCE: $9.58- POSSIBLE RECORD GARF OF THE CENTURY

The last player Rich ever calls on down is Peipei Chu and the last IUFB is an XBOX 360 Elite package (Manuela behind rising sign). Muhammad's been here the whole show.

Peipei: $850
Jacquelyn: $900
Muhammad: $1K
Eric: $1,001 (possible bad news for Muhammad)

HEADED TO THE DREADED DORM: Muhammad

ARP: $1,005

Since Eric was four bucks off on the good side, he'll play Switch? for groceries for a year marked at $3,247 (Eric) and an Inspire home gym marked at $4,295 (Amber)...but he switches the prices and we have a winless second half.

Video Bonus: Some of today's Pricing Games

My lineup today:

1. Lucky $even
2. Pl!nko
3. Switch?
4. Balance Game
5. Check-Out
6. Pushover

SHOWCASE SHOWDOWN #2:

But after they get hired someplace, they might get from here to there in the silver Chrysler PT Cruiser (Std., Conv.)(Amber at Door #3).

TONIE BIDS 22 GRAND ON WORK/CAR SHOWCASE
