"Jeopardy!/Lingo" 7/29

J!: After a while without one, I would like to have two straight season finales w/ a repeat champion. Justin Sausville's trying to do that against:

Lisa McDermott (Modesto, CA)- Arts administrator
Marty Butterick (Monterey Park, CA)- USC baseball's director of operations

Round 1 Board:

THE CALL OF THE WILD
RAY CHARLES
THE DEPARTMENT OF HOMELAND SECURITY
RONS, DONS & JOHNS
THE OLD TESTAMENT-- BEFORE THE DELUGE
ENDS WITH "U"

A bit before the break w/ $1,600, Justin jumps on the $800 clue regarding The Department of Homeland Security, because it holds a Daily Double; he's $200 ahead of Marty for second place & trails Lisa by $600. For another C-note & the early lead:

You'll find this branch of the military under the DHS umbrella.

"What is the Coast Guard?"...he's the new leader w/ $2,600. But he's behind Lisa by $600 again once the commercials officially start; Marty's at the two grand mark.

LACH TRASH (all unattempted): $1,800 (last two Ray Charles clues)

After Opening Round:

Justin: $7,200
Marty: $3,800
Lisa: $3,400

Last Half-Dozen Category Slate:

"V" LOVE SCIENCE
TV OPENING CREDITS
STATE GEMS
BOOK TITLES
POLITICIANS
15 LETTERS OR MORE

Marty goes DD Hunting after the first two "V" clues...& he hits one right away next to the $800 TV Opening Credits answer. Of his five large, he puts up four. To zoom to first place or crash to last, here's his clue:

This form of silica, also the name of a Michigan city, is Ohio's gemstone.

"What is Flint?"...also a "Password Plus" puzzle solution that Tom Kennedy gave away late in its run, Marty's correct for $9K & is in front of the pack! He goes right after the other...but the last one of Season 27 is Justin's courtesy of the $1,600 Politicians screen; thanks to an incorrect response reversal on the middle 15-letter response clue, he's up to $17,200, while Marty's slightly increased to $14,200 & Lisa's really trailing w/ $5,800. The champion will wager $2,800 w/ less than a minute to go in this round of play:

Egon Krenz was the last Communist political leader of this country that was absorbed by its neighbor in 1990.

"What is East Germany?"...he's got $20K! We don't have the time for either the $800 TV Opening Credits answer or any of the State Gems (save for the $800 one).

DJ! LACH TRASH (all unattempted): $8,400

Going Into the Final:

Justin: $20K
Marty: $14,200
Lisa: $6,200

CORYAT SCORES:

Justin: $18,200
Marty: $11K
Lisa: $6,200

LAST FINAL JEOPARDY! CATEGORY THIS SEASON: Los Angeles Landmarks.

A James Dean memorial can be found adjacent to this structure, located at one of the high spots in L.A.

To have any hope of stealing this one, Lisa McDermott has to have wagered everything or close to that & have her response of "What is the Hollywood Sign?" be right...but it isn't & she only risked $2,400 anyway. Marty Butterick had the same thing...but didn't lose anything. Justin Sausville instead wrote down "What is the Griffith Observatory?"...WIN AT $28,401! For now, his two-game total's $58,401!

This concludes a very memorable Season 27 of "Jeopardy!". Let's run down the highlights:

-The season started w/ a bang courtesy of Roger Craig, who broke the all-time one day record of $75K w/ $77K on the second episode! He wound up being the first superchamp of the season w/ six wins & a final total of $231,200!
-Show fans got a great Christmas present when Tom Nissley became a seven-time champ near Christmas & became the third-highest money winner in regular competition w/ $236,405!
-On March 16, 2011, five-time champ Tom Kunzen produced a solo Final Jeopardy! in a regular game for only the second time in the current version's history!
-Despite missing most of his FJ! clues, Christopher Short became a six-time champ w/ nearly $100K thanks to his FJ! wagering on the Triple Stumpers!
-The period of May 2-13 saw the first-ever Teacher's Tournament, w/ Charles Temple winning the $100K & a Tournament of Champions berth.
-Who can ever forget "The IBM Challenge", which was shown on February 14-16? Watson won that.
-And the show won yet another Emmy for Outstanding GS w/ "Wheel of Fortune"!

During the early part of Season 28, you may see on TV Alex suffering from the torn Achilles tendon that occurred earlier this week. In the meantime, we wish him a speedy recovery & we'll see all of you in mid-September!
