The switch of consolation prizes to cash is consistent with other game shows; "Family Feud" used to offer $250 (or more, if a losing family's score was greater than 250), and in the 2000's, Jeopardy! went to cash for consolation prizes and Wheel of Fortune switched to $1,000 ($2,000 for couples episodes).
