"The Talk" notes

-When Julie took the day off on Monday, Sharon took her place as the head moderator on the top news topics.
-So far this week, some of the guests they've had were on shows that have been at least put on hiatus. "Let's Make a Deal" host Wayne Brady was also a part of ABC's "Trust Us With Your Life" that also had announcer Jonathan Mangum (who appears in a new Wendy's commercial), which has been replaced in its Tuesday at 9 PM EST timeslot by "Wipeout" reruns.
-Today (Tuesday), "Are You Normal, America?" hosts Barry Poznick & Kim Coles appeared to conduct a small version of their game; the panel got three out of five Q's right (Julie was back that day).
-Director Joe Carolei also directed most of "The $1,000,000 Chance of a Lifetime".

"Jeopardy!" 7/31

TUESDAY'S KIDS:
Arjun Malhotra (Sammamish, WA)- Aspiring sports medicine doctor
Injee Hong (Metairie, LA)- Wants to be a lawyer or infomercial lady (& I see she's lost a tooth)
Ryan Griffin (Waldwick, NJ)- Future aquatic biologist

Categories to Get This Party Started:

HIDING PLACES
SUPER BOWL WINNERS
NAME THAT CONTINENT

THE PLANETS
HODGEPODGE
GETTING DRESSED

Ryan goes Daily Double Hunting immediately w/ the $400 clue on The Planets...nothing yet even w/ that boy also employing the High School Strategy, but he has $2,400 & is $1K behind Injee for the early lead; Arjun currently has $2K (shortly after the first break, his incorrect response on the $800 Getting Dressed answer was reversed).

After Arjun got the good news, he picks off the DD in the center of The Planets & is tied w/ Ryan for second place; Injee's added a grand to her leading score ($4,400). Arjun goes for the tie:

The Greeks called this planet Ares.

"What is Mars?"...yes! At the end of that tight J! Round, Arjun has $6K & is $200 over Injee & $600 over Ryan.

SOLE ATTEMPTED TS:
$400 (Hiding Places)
UNATTEMPTED LACH TRASH: $1,400 ($400 & $1K Getting Dressed clues)
TOTAL LACH TRASH: $1,800

Double J! Board:

MALADIES
TV OR NOT TV (Richard Dawson said that just before a family won $10K on the '94-'95 version of "Family Feud"; the $1,600 clue was about "Are You Smarter Than a Fifth Grader?")
MEASURE FOR MEASURE
SAY GOODBYE
AMERICAN HISTORY
THE WIZARDING WORLD OF HARRY POTTER (Clue Crew clues from said attraction at Universal Orlando by Sarah Whitcomb)

Ryan continues to use the HSS, this time leading off w/ American History...but Injee gets the one within that topic in the center screen w/ $9,400; she's $3K ahead of Arjun & $3,200 ahead of Ryan. She makes this a $2K clue:

This Pioneer route stretched more than 2K miles from Missouri Northwest to near the Pacific Ocean.

"What is The Oregon Trail?"...a computer game was based on it & she aced it to break the five-figure mark at $11,400! And Say Goodbye to the last remaining DD in this game...because Ryan's hunting finally pays off at the $800 Measure for Measure answer! At $11,800, he has a $400 advantage over Injee, while Arjun's slipped to $5,200. Also for an extra $2K, here's the clue:

Number of karats in pure gold.

"What is 24?" is good enough to up his bank to $13,800! Even after all of those are gone, he's still using the HSS for the time being.

SOLE TS OF THE ROUND:
Unattempted $2K Malady

Banks After DJ!:

Ryan: $25K
Injee: $15,400
Arjun: $8,400- VIRTUALLY OUT

CORYAT SCORES:

Ryan: $23,800
Injee: $14,600
Arjun: $7K

FINAL J! SUBJECT:
Kids' Business.

The corporate headquarters of this store founded in 1948 is at One Geoffrey Way in Wayne, NJ.

ARJUN:

Response: "What is American Eagle"
BUST

Injee has "What is Toys R Us?" to fill her bank all the way up to $29,900...& is the winner! Ryan misses out on $38K by writing of all companies, Dunkin' Donuts, down. If this had been a TS, Arjun actually had a chance to win if he hadn't bet too much.

MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS
A HISTORY LESSON
IT'S MOVIE TIME
NATURAL DISASTERS
BIG STUFF
3 Ses

After getting off to a $200 start from It's Movie Time, Matthew goes Daily Double Hunting, beginning w/ the $400 Musical Instruments screen...even after shifting to the High School Strategy, no DD there, but he does end that category w/ $2,400 to Anna's $800; Mandy's $800 in the hole. Once the commercials start rolling, Anna's just taken the lead $4,800-$4,400, while Mandy's $1,800 in the red.

As we get deeper into this round...Matthew finally finds the DD under the $600 piece of Big Stuff & he's back in first place, $6,600-$6K. He only wagers $300.

In 1934, a giant clam yielded one of these gems weighing more than 14 pounds.

"What is pearl?"...he's $100 shy of $7K now. After the board's wiped clean, Mandy will start Double J! w/ a positive $200, whereas Anna's got the lead back, $8K-$7,300.

PERFECT ROUND!

DJ! Subjects:

PERFORMING KIDS

TRAVELING THE USA
"It's a Noisy Planet"
THINGS THAT GO BLOOM
"B" PLUS

As Anna's lead grows w/ her at $15,600, Mandy snatches a DD courtesy of the $800 Performing Kids w/ $600; Matthew trails Anna by $5,900. Mandy risks half of what Matthew wagered on the first one of the night, but here's her clue:

Asa Butterfield played this 2011 title movie character whose last name's Cabaret.

"Who is Yugo?"...also the name of a cheap foreign car company, she's correct for a new sum of $750. Back to the current shootout, Matthew claims the final DD tonight attached to the $1,600 It's a Noisy Planet block w/ its $2K clue & the last two Things That Go Bloom left after this. W/ $19,700, he leads Anna by $1,300; Mandy's barely hanging in there at $1,950. This time...he bets a $10 bill:

Since the 1870s, people have been worried about the "air" type of this; since the 1970s, about the "noise" type.

"What is sickness?"...no, it's pollution, so that was a really smart move.

DJ! LACH TRASH (all unattempted):

Mandy: $1,950
Anna: $20,400
Matthew: $21,290

GO FISH
A HAMMER FEST
THE FEMALE LEAD VOCALIST
DEMOCRA"C" (each correct word/words lead off w/ that letter)

Alison has SWEPT The Female Lead Vocalist & currently has $3,600. After a moderately unsuccessful use of the High School Strategy on the last two Historic Headlines by Leo, we reach the first commercial break & he has $1K; Jenny's in third place w/ a couple hundred dollars.

Later, five clues remain (the last two Go Fish screens & the last three under A Hammer Fest) & Jenny w/ $2,800 goes Daily Double Hunting at the $800 A Hammer Fest spot...just missed it- Alison captures it under its $1K answer w/ $4,600; Leo's slightly in last w/ $2,400. Alison goes for a new sum of $5,800 w/ all of these words:

The Soviet Constitution of 1918 said that the coat of arms should include these two items, handles down.

"What are a hammer & sickle?"...yeah. Once that topic's finished by Jenny's correct response to inch to $3,400, so is this round.

He was named for a distant cousin who was aboard a sloop during the 1814 bombardment of a Baltimore fort.

"Who is F. Scott Fitzgerald?"...he was the writer, so Leo has made the rise to $8,400. The final DD of civilian play this season goes to Jenny on the $800 Capital Step three turns later; Alison now has 7,800 bucks. Of her $3,800, Jenny gambles three grand:

In 1955, it beat out Aberystwyth to become capital.

"What is Belfast?"...that Irish city's NOT it. Instead, that was Cardiff, Wales.

SOLE ATTEMPTED TS:
$2K (Capital Steps)

"Jeopardy!" 7/26/12

PLAYERS:
Leo Lopez (Brooklyn)- Psychiatrist
Lori Hohenleitner (Atlantic Highlands, NJ)- Executive director for a non-profit
CHAMP: Doug Thornton (whose one-day cash winnings total $22K)

Thursday's Half-Dozen Categories to Begin:

STUPID ANSWERS: MOVIES
QUOTES OF THE 2010s
SHAKESPEARE
BUSINESS & INDUSTRY
THE CIVIL WAR BY THE NUMBERS
DO YOU KNOW THE "LING"O?

$200 SA:

Melissa McCarthy was a scene-stealer as one of the bridesmaids in this raunchy chick flick.

Leo: "What is 'Bridesmaids'?" ($600)

His next clue choice of the $600 in Shakespeare triggers the Daily Double; the guys are tied for the early lead & lead the center lady by $400. Leo's $1K answer:

Shakespeare's 37 plays are traditionally classified into three groups: comedies, tragedies & these.

"What are histories?"...$1,600 & sole possession of the lead are now his.

$400 SA:

In "Jurassic Park", Richard Attenborough has created a dinosaur-filled animal preserve called this.

Lori: "What is 'Jurassic Park'?" ($2,400)

$600 SA:

This film w/ a one-word title's based on the play God of Carnage.

Lori: "What is 'Carnage'?" ($3K)

$800 SA:

A dolphin loses its tail in a crab trap in this family film based on a real dolphin named Winter.

Leo: "What is 'Winter'?" ($800)
Lori: "What is 'A Dolphin Tail'?" ($3,800)

FINAL SA TONIGHT:

The third film in the "Shrek" series has this three-word title.

Lori: "What is 'Shrek the Third'?" ($4,800)

She's in Lock Game Territory at the break w/ $5,200 & is $4K ahead of Leo & $4,600 over Doug.

SOLE ATTEMPTED TS:
$800 (Business & Industry)
SOLE UNATTEMPTED TS: $400 (The Civil War By the Numbers)
TOTAL LACH TRASH: $1,200

Scores After the Round:

Doug & Lori: $5K each
Leo: $4,400

Now in Double J!:

BARONS & BARONESSES
TRANSPORTATION
CELEBRITY RHYME TIME
GIVE 'EM HEALTH!
BIBLICAL WIFERY
LESSER-KNOWN GREEKS & ROMANS (each correct response ends in -us)?

Lori lands a DD behind the $1,200 Biblical Wifery w/ $6,600; she's trailing the champ from Virginia by $1,600 for second place & is $5K out of the lead. She places a $2.5K wager:

Laban promises this daughter to Jacob as a wife but substitutes Leah for her at the last minute.

"Who is Rachel?"...she's in second by nine bills. However, Leo SWEEPS the topic about Lesser-Known Greeks & Romans to propel big time to $20,800! W/ the Barons & Baronesses left & $9K, Doug goes DD Hunting in the center to start...that's a TS, but his $1,600 pick is good! He risks $7K & I hear Lori w/ $7,900 say "Wow":

Rudolf Erich Raspe wrote a 1785 booklet of tall tales about him; the real baron disapproved.

"Who is Baron von Munchausen?"...Lori has the right to say "Awesome", because Doug got it to stay in the contest at $16K! After the $2K clue goes untried, the round's over.

SOLE ATTEMPTED TS:
$1,600 (Transportation)
UNATTEMPTED LACH TRASH: $6,400
TOTAL DJ! LACH TRASH: $8K

Post-DJ! Banks:

Doug: $16K
Lori: $7,900
Leo: $19,600

CORYAT SCORES:

Doug: $10,600
Lori: $6,600
Leo: $19,200

FINAL J! SUBJECT:
Opera.

The swan boats in Boston's Public Garden were inspired by this opera in which a swan pulls a boat on The Scheldt River.

Lori's wrong w/ "What is Cinderella?" & declines by $2,100. Doug also missed w/ "What is The Magic Flute"...& is going home after losing 15 grand. Leo doesn't like his Q of "What is The Flying Dutchman?", either...because it was Lohengrin by Richard Wagner. But he's still the new champ w/ $7,199; had Lori wagered $701 or less, she would've been a titleholder. Regardless, Doug goes away w/ $23K (but he also could've retained his title had he risked as little as $199).

On June 16, 1870, this was dedicated in Atlanta City; at the end of the Summer season, it was taken apart & stored.

"What is the Boardwalk?"...he's right for first place at $4,600! At the conclusion of the round, Andy's again slightly over Doug, $5,800-$5,200; Sue has the advantage in Double J! w/ $3,400.

Andy picks off a DD inside the center Biography w/ $11,800; his small lead over Doug's currently $600 & Sue's a fairly close third place w/ $8,600. The kingpin wagers the face value of the following piece of information:

Hertha Pauli's 1942 biography of this man was subtitled "Dynamite King, Architect of Peace".

"Who is (Alfred) Nobel?"...that was the guy for the small climb to $13K! But Sue claims the Video DD two turns later from the $1,200 Flora of Central America hub w/ $10,200; she's trailing Doug by a grand for second & is $2,800 out of first. For another $3K & to put her in front of this pack, the answer from Sarah Whitcomb at the Casa Orquideas in Costa Rica is:

The Aristolochia Vine's foul odor attracts insects that are then trapped alive inside the flower & later released w/ a coat of this substance, vital to the plant's reproduction.

"What is nectar?"...not nectar; it's pollen. But she does sweep the rest of that subject to run her bank back up to $10,800.

But I've just learned that Sharon is NOT expected to return to this show next season. No word yet on if she'll return to "The Talk" next season, either.

1. David "The Bullet" Smith: Shot out through a field goal from 40 yards away w/ "Let Me Entertain You" by Robbie Williams playing in the background

2. All That!: "Black Betty" by Ram Jam
3. Ulysses: "Bandstand Boogie ("American Bandstand" theme)" by Charles Albertine- MARKED FOR ELIMINATION (I didn't think he sounded bad)
4. Joe Castillo
5. Sebastien "El Charro de Oro": Threw a rose to Sharon at the end
6. Eric Dittleman: "Deal or No Deal" spoof w/ 16 briefcases where Howard eliminated the third row & Sharon took out the fourth row after Howie chose #11, which he then correctly traded for #4!
7. William Close: "Love Reign O'er Me" by The Who (a giant Earth harp was used)
8. Unity in Motion: Cold background
9. Eric & Olivia: "Dynamite" (remix w/ bells heard in the background for the intro) by Taio Cruz
10. Lindsey Norton: Fun house mirrors
11. Horse: Nasty superhero
12. Olate Dogs

Justin: Re-heating old fish

RT
WINS

LAST ELIMINATED FROM SOLO MODE THIS SEASON-
Brian (Barbie had to take over his area for the later part of the DS)

"Jeopardy!" 7/24

PLAYERS:
Prudence Plunkett (Wasilla, AK)- A librarian whose dog Maggie ate most of her car's seating one time)
Zack Knowles (Baltimore, MD)- Secretary
CHAMP: Andy Baggarly (whose two-day cash winnings total $40,001; he was a former Milwaukee Brewers sausage racer)

Tuesday's Topics to Get Going:

SPACE FIRSTS (speaking of that, Sally Ride died Monday of pancreatic cancer at 61; she was the first woman in space)
THE RISE OF THE MOVIES
WHAT ARE YOU AFRAID OF?
DOUBLE-LETTER WORDS
BABY NAMES

ANAGRAMMED 21st CENTURY LEADERS

Andy's six bills over Zack, $2,600-$2K, followed by Prudence at $1,200. Prudence finds out that the $800 Double-Letter Word has the Daily Double assigned to it w/ her at $2,400; Zack's at $2,200 & Andy's still in first place at $3,200. She goes for the tie on this answer:

The Germans call Brussels Sprouts "rosenkohl", literally "rose" this.

"What are pebbles?"...that qualifies, but that's incorrect; it's cabbage. The round ends before the conclusion of The Rise of the Movies, but she's back up to $2,800; Andy's in second for now w/ $3,200 & Zack leads the titleholder by $1,400.

LACH TRASH (all unattempted):
$3K

Double J! Listings:

OLD WEST LITERATURE
ALBUM COVER ART
NAUTICAL TALK
ARGENTINA
NOTABLE NAMES
SPELLED LIKE A PLACE

Andy starts w/ a right response on the first bit of Nautical Talk & then digs up a Video DD two clues later. He risks $1,400 of his $3,600 in his attempt to get back in the lead courtesy of this clue from Jimmy Maguire:

In the age of sail, each country had its own cut, or style, of these triangular sails that enhanced the steering abilities of large ships.

"What is the jib?"...that's $5K. Andy does use the High School Strategy w/ the right category of Notable Names (there's less than a minute left in this round of play)...& the $1,600 screen delivers him the last DD of the game w/ $6,600; he's $3,400 ahead of Prudence for second & $3,600 out of the lead. Andy makes a $4K gamble, so this game could be over if he misses this:

Mark Twain published this man's memoirs in 1885 & called them "...the best of any General's since Caesar".

"Who is (Ulysses S.) Grant?"...got him! No time for the last three Old West Literature answers.

ATTEMPTED LACH TRASH:
$5,200
UNATTEMPTED LACH TRASH: $8,400
TOTAL DJ! LACH TRASH: $13,600

Scores After DJ!:

Andy: $10,600
Zack: $10,200
Prudence: $3,200

CORYAT SCORES:

Andy: $8K
Zack: $10,200
Prudence: $4K

FINAL J! SUBJECT:
'80s Sitcom Characters.

Creator David Goldberg wrote this Republican character as unsympathetic, but the actor made him lovable.

Prudence's got "Who (was) Alex from 'Family Ties'"...NOT ACCEPTABLE & SHE LOSES EVERYTHING. Zack totally misses the mark w/ "Who is Michael J. Fox"...& ALSO BUSTS, so both challengers will likely leave w/ $2K each. For another $20,401 or just an extra $799, Andy's final Q this evening was "Who is Alex Keaton?"...YES! That puts him in ToC contention w/ a three-day total of $60,402.
